I heard yesterday by chance that this is a secret project by Donald Glover, whom I really appreciate, and that the film can only be seen for free on Amazon Prime today.
It tells the story of a passionate musician who wants to organize a music festival on a dictatorial island. But with his positive, comic, freedom-loving nature, he is a thorn in the side of the dictator who has the island and its people under control and doesn't want people to be distracted by the processing of the precious blue silk for which Guava Island is known.
Guava Island is a Childish Gambino film. This is shown right at the beginning. Accordingly, the film is always underlaid with the wonderful songs of Donald Glover's fictional character Childish Gambino. But you shouldn't expect a 55 minute music video. It's more than that. The individual songs are organically woven (like blue silk) into the story and, in combination with the creative animated intro, the 4:3 format and the valuable look and stunning cinematography, form a celebration of life, freedom and not least the freedom of life and art.
