Watched in the cinema (39th visit in 2024)
Since the first "Ghostbusters" appearance in 1984, the ghost hunters have been audience favorites whose adventures have also found their fans in TV series over the years, in addition to sequels and spin-offs. With "Ghostbusters: Afterlife", director Jason Reitman brought a wonderful reunion back to the big screen after a long break, which is now being continued. Reitman himself co-wrote the screenplay, and "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" was directed by "Monster House" director Gil Kenan.
"Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" has something to offer in every nook and cranny, running different storylines in parallel and presenting more than just a cross-reference to the films from the 1980s. The movie also delights you with the dynamic development of the characters - both the family and the old heroes, who are now getting on in years. For fans of the original, the appearances of Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Bill Murray are of course wonderful, and the film also pays tribute to the character of Egon Spengler.
However, the "young" Spenglers take center stage, with Mckenna Grace as Phoebe once again standing out and going a little deeper in her own story than her colleagues. Among them, Paul Rudd is a fanboy with great entertainment value, while Finn Wolfhard is a little underwhelming, as is Carrie Coon, who plays her mother role somewhat at the expense of fun. Or had to.
However, "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" is not just a family comedy, but comes up with all sorts of spooky stuff. The ghosts are excellently animated, the villain is pretty terrifying and the little marshmallow men continue to steal every scene in which they appear. The human actors sometimes have it a little harder. Speaking of actors: Patton Oswalt as a special librarian and the English comedian James Acaster are in perfect hands in their roles, as is Kumail Nanjiani in his inimitable manner. The cast of "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" is wonderful!
And if you still haven't had enough of ghosts and haunted figures at the end, just stay for a while, because there's something funny to see during the credits.
