Watched in the cinema (109th visit in 2024)
There are many conspiracy theories about the US moon landing in 1969, which have been fueled by pop culture ever since. In "Fly Me to the Moon", the faked moon landing is also a topic, although it is shot in the film alongside the real mission. Even Stanley Kubrick is mentioned - after his sci-fi masterpiece "2001: A Space Odyssey", the director was suspected of having also staged the moon landing a year later.
The moon conspiracy is wrapped up in a huge mishmash of genres. "Fly Me to the Moon" wants to be a homage to the courageous people at NASA, a romantic comedy and a marketing satire all at the same time. This mix doesn't always work and also leads to a few long takes. However, when Greg Berlanti's film focuses on one genre for a while, it is certainly enjoyable. A very playful Scarlett Johansson, who gives a tongue-in-cheek and accentuated performance, plays a big part in this. It's a joy to watch her Kelly shake up the Nasa operation and lead business people and politicians around by the nose.
Meanwhile, Channing Tatum has the somewhat thankless task of playing the man with the stick up his ass and can hardly show his comedic talent - although you often get the feeling that he would like to have a few laughs too. But Tatum embodies the blood and sweat of the more than 400,000 Nasa people who made the mission possible - there's hardly any room for jokes.
Quite the opposite of Woody Harrelson and Jim Nash. The latter, in particular, clearly enjoys his role as the director's diva, who is outraged by the cast and crew on the moon set. Harrelson, meanwhile, plays it the way he often does: slightly mischievous, with that familiar grin and stern look never too far away. You definitely wouldn't want to shoot them all on the moon.
The score by Daniel Pemberton, who is able to showcase a wide range of his art here thanks to the mix of genres, is also outstandingly good. In the end, "Fly Me to the Moon" is a thoroughly enjoyable movie. However, this trip into space is a little too bumpy for a completely detached enthusiasm.
