"Entrapment" (German title "Verlockende Falle"-tempting trap) starts after a Mission-Impossible inspired sequence with two charming leading actors and a lot of winking: Catherine Zeta-Jones brings snub nose and dimples profitably into the rather hackneyed Heist movie story. Sean Connery, with his subtly hinted irony and virility, has little problem in impersonating his older master thief anyway. But already after about 20 minutes the film flattens out more and more and gets bogged down in the monotony of the clichés of this genre. Locations and filming sites are constantly changing. There is constant trickery and (of course successfully) theft.
The film reaches its low point at the latest when Zeta-Jones has to perform her yoga and gymnastic exercises for hours. Including splits and beam gymnastics, with and without doubles, but always with the main goal of making the audience believe that a master gymnast is at work here. Thereby the crawling and dancing overcoming of laser beams of an alarm system is not only a 1000-fold cliché, but in case of invisible beams even impossible. And all this just to show the butt of C Z-J or her body double in tight black suits again and again. I was just about to fall asleep when another twin tower is stormed, the main actress is rescued with a completely silly parachute drop through a narrow shaft and everything is heading for the lame showdown in an Asian suburban train station. Yawn!
If you want to see what's missing here, just watch "To Catch A Thief" or the original "The Thomas Crown Affair". "Entrapment" is a lame infusion. And besides, the chemistry between the main actors is really not right. Sean Connery fell asleep during the gymnastics exercises of Zeta-Jones at the latest and didn't wake up again until the finale. It's adorable how he stands on the platform in one of his last shots, wearing light-colored pensioner clothes, to say goodbye while waiting for the train to a nice retirement home.
