A big, positive surprise came to our cinemas at the end of 2007. "Enchanted" turned out to be a beautifully kitschy Disney fairy tale that did not stop at delightful winks and had various references to offer for fans and friends of classic fairy tales. In Germany, this comedy attracted over 1.4 million viewers to the cinemas and hardly anyone was disappointed.
Initially still an animated fairy tale (including the cute little animals and their cleaning orgy), "Enchanted" soon changes into a real feature film in which Amy Adams is flung into present-day New York in her princess costume. There, and all women take a deep breath, she meets Patrick Dempsey, who of course immediately takes a shine to the somewhat naive princess and, in the midst of all the singing, even abandons his real fiancée.
These romantic moments are supported by various references to classic Disney films, a squeaking squirrel and a villain who, however, acts a bit too stupidly to finally be recognised as a real "danger". The evil witch, wonderfully portrayed by Susan Sarandon, also tries to spoil the longed-for happy ending at the end and takes the form of a dragon to boot. This may be a bit too much of a good thing, but after all we are in a fairy tale film and of course a beautiful dragon cannot be missing.
"Enchanted" is delightfully light-hearted cinema that easily puts a smile on the viewer's face and sunshine in the heart. Great actors, nice jokes and lively music from Alan Menken offer the fan exactly what he/she can expect. And of course much, much more. I'm looking forward to the sequel which will come next year.
