IronWatcher’s review published on Letterboxd:
Watched in the cinema
I saw a couple of Winnie Pooh movies when I was a kid. But I have to confess that I was never the biggest fan of it. There was just too much other Disney stuff that I liked more. That's why I watched "Christopher Robin" without much expectation.
As I have also seen "Goodbye Christopher Robin" this year (review also on letterboxd) and therefore know about the depressing genesis of the children's book, I had at least the expectation that the Disney movie is much more child-friendly.
I should not be disappointed. The film lets the naive world of cuddly animals collide with the rational world of adults. This leads to a lot of child-friendly, but pleasant humor, but also to quiet, melancholic moments, which I particularly liked.
The group around Winnie Pooh looks phenomenal. The cute characters look like real cuddly toys. Even the owl and the bunny are fantastically animated.
Ewan McGregor was exactly the right choice for the role of adult Christopher. He convinces as a responsible, but overworked workaholic, who has to find the inner child again.
Overall, a bit too little happens over the entire run length. I must inevitably compare Christopher Robin with Hook from Steven Spielberg. The film is one of my all-time favorite children's films. Hook manages the loss and recovery of childhood much more memorable than Christopher Robin. I can not imagine that the six-year-olds, who watch Christopher Robin today, can look back on it in 20 years like I do on Hook. But I was wrong before.
