It's hard to say what was missing. The 2017 version of "Beauty and the Beast" takes over much of the story of the original Disney classic, adds a few little things and still doesn't create the magic of the animated version. Yet the cast is well chosen. Emma Watson and Luke Evans fit perfectly into the roles. I feel very sorry for Dan Stevens, whom I hold in high esteem, but his talent cannot shine through under tons of moderate CGI.
However, the songs don't quite manage to achieve the effect they had back then. The visual realization once again seems too artificial. Like last year in "Aladdin", "Beauty and the Beast" also feels like built sets and musicals and less like a 17th/18th century France. The small runtime additions, including the new songs, can't support the remake either. The film fails mainly because of some key moments that don't come close to the animated classic. Neither the big dance, nor Belle's escape or fight with the wolves are equally impressively staged.
If a remake can't offer any added value in this respect, then there is no reason for a realization. Nevertheless, the live-action version is not bad. The story still works and visually you get a respectable Disney movie. As a live-action remake, however, the story doesn't really work for certain reasons and these reasons are hard to describe.
