Rhinoplasties mentioned!
The only bit of positivity I can hold onto here is that I liked the setup of Emilia Pérez. After all the hate that I heard on the day of its Netflix release — hate that was seldom seen at its Cannes, TIFF or NYFF premieres — I felt prepared to say, after 40 or so minutes of watching, that I was intrigued by this film and a lot of the hate seemed hyperbolic. Yes, this film is rather misguided about the trans experience, which comes as no surprise if you look at the mainly cis cast and crew that worked on it and compare it to the likes of I Saw the TV Glow; this never really felt like a film from the heart. I was only interested by anything that happened in the first act, and that interest was usually squashed by something annoying or insensitive that occurred swiftly after; therefore, as the film progressed into its remaining acts, the only parts where I understood what was happening annoyed me; so overall, I did not have a great experience and I hope that this doesn’t get more awards recognition that it deserves.
Go watch the Will & Harper doc instead, it’s the same streaming service.
