I love this movie. The theme of the aging patriarch Don Vito Corleone as he tries to maintain his way of life in a changing world could be about any family business and not just the mafia. He has aspirations for his family but is forced to realize they many not come true during his time. This is one of the best ensemble casts ever and it is impossible to single out just one performance…Marlon Brando, James Caan, Al Pacino, the list goes on.
I love how the movie opens with a single man speaking about America as he asks Don Corleone to inflict “justice” on the boys that hurt his daughter. Marlon Brando listens, playing with a kitty on his lap, and responds calmly eventually agreeing to help this undertaker while securing a future favor. “I want reliable people, people that aren’t going to be carried away. I mean we are not murderers, despite what this undertaker thinks.” As the wedding scenes continue, each character’s nature is revealed to the audience and I am immediately hooked. The score, the cinematography, the costumes and, of course, the highly quotable script create a classic movie I watch again and again.
