Easily Burton’s best movie in more than 15 years; gobsmacking how it feels like a pure expansion of the original with no strings attached, considering it’s a legacy sequel. It’s not trying to shove a multiverse on one’s throat, nor setting a future continuation whatsoever with annoying kids (this is how much the world loves you, Jenna Ortega, we could never call you annoying); and it lets its twisted auteur run loose with sillier and smarter ideas than the studio system usually allows him. Whether we’re talking about that baby that is just so obnoxiously random, or even Bellucci’s character that makes a killing of an entrance; it’s all a thrilling and funny breath of fresh air — and perfectly lit and colorful at that, a movie that understands the concept of darkness and light and refuses to be grey, imagine!!…
We need to put Winona back on the map ASAP, that elusive Oscar is still waiting for her.
