First movie of the year!
I really enjoyed this movie, but not as much as I would have hoped. Frankly I think I just built it up too much in my head. I saw it with a few of my family members and they all thought it was okay, but wouldn't rush to see it again. But from a filmmakers standpoint, I enjoyed it more. It wasn't the most complicated movie in the world, but there were still a few shots and scenes that I wish I could see the behind the scenes of what went into them.
I also loved the color palette of this film. Everything was in bright primary colors and stood out. They did a wonderful job at keeping the audience's attention where they wanted it, on the actors. The world around them seemed very muted until you see scenes like when they are searching for their cars or in the observatory when everything just lights up.
My favorite part was that I couldn't place when the movie took place. It almost felt timeless, in a timeline of its own. One second you swear you are watching something out of the 20s then you jump to 50s or 70s then next thing you know people are texting on their phones in one shot then boom. Back in the 20s. It also wasn't just the acting and costume that reflected that, it was the movie itself. The way things were shot felt very dated while others felt modern. There were also a few clever nods to classic movies and transitions or tropes that transported me to movies from the 60s and 70s. Everything fit so well together that nothing felt forced or out of place. It was like they were weaving in and out of various timelines, but that never mattered because it was all about the characters and the drive of their careers.
I enjoyed this movie quite a bit. However, I don't know if I'd jump to recommend it to a casual movie viewer. If you like good films, the types that are a little out of the box and win awards, by all means watch. But if you are into something cliche or/and average hollywood love story, I'd say this isn't the movie for you.
