To celebrate, it’s a movie from Robin’s Top 150 list here! Robin has wonderful favourites, and I choose a movie that didn’t click the first time round. It’s Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves!
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is a lighthearted fantasy romp, perfect for my personal tastes, so I can’t tell you why I couldn’t get into it the first time. I must’ve been having a bad day or something. 🤷♀️ Anyway, I’ve been meaning to try again and I’m rather glad I have because I had such a FUN TIME!
I’ve never played D&D, but of course I’ve heard of D&D. I can’t comment on how authentic it is to its roots or game-playing experience. So for a D&D noob, it’s high praise from me to say how much of a blast this was. I love seeing this motley crew come together, united with a relic-heist mission. It’s full of silly gags, a tiny Bradley Cooper (?) and ends on a slick Tame Impala track.
Each character seemed to take on an archetype, but what was refreshing for me was how Dungeons & Dragons would also put their own spin on it. Like Michelle Rodriguez’s Holga is “the muscle”, but I was touched to learn about her backstory. A deadpan Chris Pine killed it! Hugh Grant kills it AGAIN with his smarminess, but it’s a joy to see him tap into that goofy side. My ✨surprise scene-stealer✨ was Regé-Jean Page. I was cackling to see him play a smouldering, yet super-serious paladin.
What I love the most about Dungeons & Dragons, is that it never pretends to be more than it is. It’s a well-intentioned tribute to the game, where it balances quippy comedy with a lot of heart. It does this far more naturally than some recent Marvel outputs. I don’t tend to lean into deep fantasy, so for me, Dungeons & Dragons takes the best parts of fantasy movies that I enjoy the most.
