“Ah, Star Wars. That’s good fiction.”
The Dead Don’t Die is Jim Jarmusch’s deadpan plea for everyone to wake the hell up. The film takes a similar parable as Romero’s zombie classics, but instead of racism or consumerism it’s about our modern climate emergency and instead of horror it’s wit set in Jarmusch’s sedated, quirky world. Angry and chill at the same time. Many moments of brief magic and as always great writing from Jarmusch that loses some of it’s steam and sadly imagination. Then again Tilda Swinton wielding a katana out weighs a lot.
An amazing cast of talented actors who delivers Jarmusch’s vision of modern society in perfect monotoned meta absurdity. In the intro it’s one brilliant pink actor name fading after another almost to comedic effect. I mean c’mon, it’s fucking RZA and Bill Murray in a movie together.

Overall, you know what I did enjoy The Dead Don’t Die and all it’s awkward scoffing. I definitely laughed and maybe even thought a little in the process. At times I felt like the story was 60% there, but interesting and enjoyable none the less with a clear message. And the part about zombies attracted to their hobbies and normal activities is fascinating. The dialogue is first rate and my style of humor. I will be rewatching and believe I will like it more on multiple viewing. Then again I’m not exactly compelled to rewatch. Right now I was hoping for something a little more than “we’re fucked but I’m clever and subversive ” attitude from a great director and writer. Saying that it somehow has a high potential to grow into a classic for me.
