I'll be honest I thought Tim Burton's filmmaking Goose was well and truly cooked. Truly I didn't believe he had it in him to make a film that wasn't parody of his own style and the 2010s sort of had me set in that belief, but, no, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was an actually competent endeavour.
I'm actually somewhat astounded because I'd gone in with expectations very mild, so to come out afterwards having watched a film that was a total blast from beginning to end I'm genuinely really pleased. It had that liveliness and pop that the original Beetlejuice and some of Burton's early films like Pee-Wee's Big Adventure had where the elements of the Gothic and the macabre were backdropped by an intense colour and energy and this sequel has it too. It's as much a riot as its predecessor too and it can't be denied that Michael Keaton fell back into the role of the Juice like he'd never left it, just the worst character you've ever met but such a joy to watch at all times.
Maybe I don't love it like I love Beetlejuice but I wasn't really expecting to? It's a worthy sequel and maybe Burton's last burst of something great and for me that's more than enough.
I'll say this though, the film addresses Jeffery Jones in the funniest and most befitting way imaginable. The long and drawn out recount of his demise is absolutely perfect and scored this film some major points from me.
