Hugo’s review published on Letterboxd:
A perfect sequel to the original film.
Contrary to many recent "requels", which tend to re-do the original plot, this film takes the world and the characters from the original "Beetlejuice" and adds to them, while also playing with completely new stuff that perfectly fit into the universe and serving homage to the original.
Michael Keaton is a scene-stealer just like he was on the original, however, they give his character quite more screentime and time to shine in this one, without it getting tiring at any point. Winona Ryder and Jenna Ortega also give us delightful performances that build upon their characters and themes of the movie.
If you're a Burton fan, this is all you've ever wanted since he switched to CGI some years ago. This movie has the same magic feeling as the original, with almost everything being practical effects and stop motion. It also shares some writers and elements with the last project where Burton was involved, "Wednesday" on Netflix.
One of the things I liked the most in this sequel is how it adds to the underworld and the universe introduced in the original film, there is a crazy ammount of creative ideas and elements that work really well and help making this sequel feel like a really fun party, specially when paired with the soundtrack.
Lastly, the only general complaint I've seen is the amount of subplots there are in the movie, however I feel like everything that comes to this franchise has a lot of chaos to it, and all the subplots here add to that chaos and help in adding to all the unique ideas, and even if it could feel overwhelming while you're watching it, when you think back into it they all helped each character have different motives to end up in the same place with no plots left open.
I love Beetlejuice and I'm really satisfied with this being as good as I wanted! Definitely check it out if you're a fan of the franchise or Burton.
