You know it's kinda interesting watching these 60s and 70s English movies. What WW2 and Thatcherism did to the country.
There was a long time in human history where the idea of the war hero was so common. the conquering soldier coming back from war. The honourable death, young men dying for their countries. the noble knight, the honourable samurai. And the valiant soldier fighting off Nazism.
And as time goes on an on we are understanding more and more the reality of war. That is is a bunch of powerful people using our lives in their 4D game of chess. Dan Olsen said one of my favorite quotes.
"Young Men sent to war don't die for their country, they just die"
We see the Queen being so excited about her man in a suit of honour. His father saying he wanted John to kill. Who? Well preferably foreigners. He just wants him to kill for a good cause.
Kill for a good cause? Yeah, we don't see that kind of pro-war propaganda all over the place. Look up tomorrow's pioneers. you'll be sorry.
John Rainbird, in a come keeps going through iterations of the accident that caused his coma, each one more surreal, each one with visceral images of slaughter and pain. A father who idealizes the solider (likely fought in WW2) alongside images of slaughterhouses, of fascist governments suppressing dissent.
I think in America it was Vietnam that kind of kicked this into your heads. but as time keep going on more and more we are realizing the reality of war and more and more. And more and more we are demanding the power changes.
Young me don't die for their country, they just die.
