I somehow forgot how much fun this movie is. It's certainly bleak in parts, but never dour. A kind of a jovial dance of death for these men living on borrowed time. Even the brutal violence comes with an exuberant energy of movement and cuts, adding up to a symphony of destruction of lives and a way of life. My only issue with this much-heralded masterpiece is the characterization. Every character, with the possible exception of Robert Ryan's Deke Thornton, is paper thin, as are their relationships. It's a puzzling deficiency in such a well-established story framework.
