Having now seen two of Jerry Schatzberg's movies in the last year, I feel like I have stumbled across a lost treasure of New Hollywood. Much like Scarecrow, The Panic in Needle Park is brimming with empathy and kindness even while refusing to shy away from the ugliness of the characters and their environments. Case in point: Kitty Winn. Her soulful eyes carry the movie, even outshining Al Pacino, and we can only imagine what a career she could have had had she not retired at a young age.
