I always go back and forth on the third act of this, but I think I like it. I especially like how Garland foreshadows it with Doctor Searle early on.
If there is an issue, it’s that the ideas behind the turn are not fully explored then or before. Maybe it’s asking too much that a plot-heavy story like this would rise to the thematic levels of something like Ad Astra, but it still feels a bit incomplete.
The biggest strength of the movie, unsurprisingly, is the visual style. Boyle does a lot of interesting things with the camera to convey the enormity of the sun, and the particular techniques in the third act are really unsettling. Rather than keep [redacted] in the dark, the camera itself rejects the image, unable to process the sheer force of what it sees.
