This was probably my first rewatch since Strange Days came out on home video. In all the obvious ways, it looks (and sometimes feels) very dated. Kathryn Bigelow’s sci-fi neo noir indulges in all the tropes and trends of its era, resulting in a grungy, dirty, and pessimistic vision of the near future that says more about when it was made rather than what was to come. Yet, it is more than a mere artifact of the post-Cold War angst that now seems positively quaint. Whereas most entries in this genre carry an undercurrent of sadness, Strange Days wallows in it. Jim Cameron’s script (and Ralph Fiennes’ terrific performance) is so achingly about loss it feels like a break-up story. Or depression. When I first watched Strange Days, I thought the sad parts were just a color filter, almost annoying. But I see now that the sadness is integral to the story. It defines our protagonist, and it gives meaning to the technology at the core of the plot beyond just being a Macguffin. It’s an indictment of how we use media to manipulate ourselves to feel (or not to feel).
