Aki Kaurismaki's latest is a tender, dryly funny, quirky, and subtly angry love story. Only that last part was surprising to me. The formalism and tone are continuations of Kaurismaki's filmography, but it really surprised me how romantic it is. The emotions are typically understated by the leading actors, but the nuances in their performances carry real heft. Aided is Kaurismaki's typical obsession with pop culture, and he uses it to great effect to say what the characters can't (or won't).
