This is the quintessential 90s erotic thriller. Paul Verhoeven understands the assignment too well and conjures up something so horny and outrageous the stupidity of the plot is not just ok, it’s necessary. Verhoeven also understand American culture and society in a way few foreign directors do, and the movie is less a realistic tale of how police work works here and more a primal tale of the shallow veneer of American Puritanism covering something much more sinister—if infantile.
