I find it really hard to evaluate remakes, especially one that’s this close to the original in terms of plotting and story, without devolving into component comparisons. I found Matthias Schoenaerts in Guadagnino’s A Bigger Splasg less compelling than Alain Delon‘a take on the character in the original The Swimming Pool, but Ralph Fiennes‘ Harry is miles better than Maurice Ronet’s. In fact, Fiennes alone makes this remake a superior film. But there are also larger differences in storytelling approach and vision. Guadagnino eschews the original’s smoldering, aching intensity for a wider lens—we get flashbacks and richer characterizations that open up the movie in a way that feels more inquisitive and patient. It feels less intense, but also is a more realistic portrayal of these relationship dynamics. I still struggle with the final act, but there are important nuances that distinguish it from the original while staying true to the characters.
