Serial Experiments Lain

Serial Experiments Lain

I’ve existed on the internet for most of my living memory. It’s an essential part of my life and always has been. However, I do think that at some point there was a shift. The internet became more closely linked with our identities. It stopped being a place to view, to read information, to put out information. It began to become a place where we exist and live every day.

I think there’s a lot of fear that comes with knowing that, especially if you didn’t grow up embedded in online culture. Watching it from a distance or watching it as it began to happen, I can only imagine how scary that would be. I think this is where a lot of the tone of this show comes from. The internet was a new place and nothing like this had ever existed. Information has never been able to travel this quickly; the world has never been this connected. And there was no way of knowing where that would lead to or how dangerous it could be.

I think there’s still a fear in the back of my mind when I think about how I exist online. Many of us have complicated relationships with it. It’s addicting and we spend so much of our lives buried in it. We are dependent on our devices for information, news, our social lives. There’s a competitive culture being bred in particular for online social activity. We crave attention in the form of numbers. We feel invisible when we don’t get enough numbers- views or likes. We feel a certain safety in anonymity that can be dangerous. So the fear that this series presents is one that I understand.

But I also really like that the ending feels hopeful. That there’s something beautiful and amazing in the way that humanity has become connected. A lot of my social life is only online. I have many friends that I would never have been able to connect with by just existing in my own spaces. And I love those friends. And I love that we can learn so much about so many other kinds of people.

We have come a long way since this series released but it still has relevancy that makes it strong. Our online existence is complicated, scary and kind of amazing. And that’s the feeling I got from this story as well.
