Jake’s review published on Letterboxd:
The Silence of the Lambs at a Taylor Swift concert is one of the great modern premises but the movie fails to deliver on the intrigue in the long run.
M. Night Shyamalan’s style is worth the ride though and the stressful situations are mesmerizing. As the king of twists, I was expecting a little more from the story in act three.
Josh Hartnett carries the film with his hysterical facial expressions, incredible internal freakouts, and convincingly terrifying lies. It’s a shame the trailer gives away so much because his character is pretty unique. Similar to the show You, Hartnett portrays every fucked up thought through his face. You can feel his mental processes.
It’s captivating watching him navigate the various issues at the concert. The modern slang and Gen Z of it all can be a tad annoying but anxiety-producing interactions are great. His subtle techniques of deception and manipulation are interesting and the conversations are suprisingly hilarious. The color, lighting, and cinematography of the concert are compelling as well.
The movie drastically changes once the characters shift locations though. The tense moments are still ever abundant and the conflict is met head on. Saleka, Shyamalan’s daughter, finally gets to show off a bit and the rising thrills ultimately lead to very little. After being on the edge of my seat to start the movie, the final choices don’t completely land the plane.
