This is probably the biggest surprise of the year for me so far, I didn't expect to like it nearly as much as I did. I've never been very taken by Tim Burton's style and as a result I've felt a certain disconnect with a lot of his work but this just really clicked for me. As a studio comedy it really excels. You've got tons of great actors giving wonderfully rambunctious performances (with some excellent bit parts) and it doesn't have the sardonic, tongue-in-cheek attempts to remind the audience that what's happening is craaaazy, which we see in a lot of modern comedies and I think it undercuts the material. Also this contains a sequence that revolves around the song MacArthur Park AND they also use the Donna Summer version! If I graded movies based on their usage of MacArthur Park (which I should) this would probably be greatest ever material. I will say, the most unrealistic part of this movie is that some guy is just chilling in his treehouse and then Jenna Ortega shows up and agrees to hang out with him. I dunno if Tim knows this but that's not how it works
