Dark, grim and brooding, Robert Eggers’ The Witch has all the elements of a strong thriller, it just doesn’t quite have the snap. There’s no doubt that this is a very contemplative piece that lends itself quite a lot to audience interpretation and relies on a shock factor and, even though that definitely isn’t a bad thing, I was just missing a spark. The whole cast were brilliant and, visually, The Witch is a gorgeous piece, I just found my interest waining a lot more than I would’ve liked. The Lighthouse, by comparison, is similarly seductive and mysterious in its storytelling, but I just found this a little stale. This premise is wonderful, the setting is drab and isolating, and the narration on ‘Old England’ and it’s cooked ass morality is fascinating, so that’s definitely something. But hey, it’s certainly a film that lots of other people get a lot out of, so don’t take my word for it.
