The Nice Guys was everything I hoped for but not much more than that. With an enthralling crime plot that wouldn’t be out of place in a Sir Arthur Conan Doyle story, Shane Black’s captivating period piece is gorgeous to look at, infectiously funny and, I believe, contributes to the setting of standards in modern day ‘buddy cop’ features. Ryan Gosling was incredibly entertaining and by far the best part of this whole movie, with his character being that perfect combination of asshole and unique, likeable protagonist. The same can be said for Russel Crowe’s Jackson Healy, for the most part.
If I was to pick out a small negative of The Nice Guys, it would be that I don’t feel fully satisfied with how well our two leads were balanced, in terms of character depth. Gosling was far more intriguing, and I can’t help but think Healy was undercut a little too much. I get that March’s whole thing is to not care for anyone but himself, but relevant exposition can be intertwined in other ways. I don’t know, I wanted a deeper Russ.
Unfortunately, this film is exceptional, yet it was an absolute dumpster fire at the box office. Hopefully it can pull a larger cult following out of somewhere, because this is one of the best of its breed.
