Albie Hay’s review published on Letterboxd:
I rarely consciously watch action blockbusters. The ones I do watch I will hardly ever award over three-and-a-half stars. My giving Mad Max: Fury Road four should show that I consider it an exceptional action film of the 21st century, even though the rating isn't necessarily indicative of its status.
The good thing about Fury Road is that you don't need to have seen the previous entries in the franchise to find your bearings; the film opens with the absolute minimum of verbal exposition, allowing audiences to surrender themselves to whatever the plot may fling up without having to worry about what may have happened prior to this in the franchise. Such a lack of plot explanation encourages viewers to do their own thinking, although the situation isn't so bewildering it distracts from the rhapsodic immensity of the action. The film is essentially a sequence of set-pieces within one large set-piece, and each of the former is staged within the latter with tremendous vigour, the action hurtling along.
The standard blockbuster orange-and-teal colour palette is used in an interesting way for once, enhancing the inescapable oppressiveness of the post-apocalyptic landscape. The vibrancy of the colour, and some bluntly beautiful shots, are one of the many elements that enable Fury Road to shed the trappings of today's standard-issue action extravaganza and becomes a work to show what modern studio filmmaking can and should be aspiring to.
