Fanny and Alexander

Fanny and Alexander

My thoughts on Fanny and Alexander…

“May I take your hand? I remember your hand as a child. It was small and firm and dry. And your wrist was so awfully slender. I enjoyed being a mother. I enjoyed being an actress, too, but I preferred being a mother. I liked having a big belly and I didn't give two shakes about the theater then. It's all acting anyway. Some roles are nice, others not so nice. I played a mother. I played Juliet and Margareta. Then suddenly I played a widow or a grandmother. One role follows the other. The thing is not to shrink from them.”

Bergman’s unparalleled mammoth of an epic offers an exploration of numerous topics through potent imagery or profound monologues. These often complex and lengthy monologues often have you reflecting on them throughout. Bergman presents his signature themes and concepts surrounding religion, more specifically dogmatism. It also explores family dynamics and the contrast in people who value equality and family rather than dedication to christianity. For a film to have both a seemingly mundane synopsis, and a daunting runtime then manage to capture you throughout the entirety is insanely impressive and furthers my admiration for Bergman. Even with visible moments of child abuse (both mental and physical), trauma and enforcing religion through various unethical methods. The film however still maintains your attention, even with a handful of harsh topics being shown for a large portion of the film.

The pacing was fantastic with every chapter flying by. At no point did I think to check how long it was going on for because I didn’t have the chance. It ended before I could.

There isn’t more than three moments that are dull, flat or tedious throughout this five hour, perfected odyssey. And thats a promise. Each sequence transcending the meaning of cinema due to it’s immersive narrative, shot composition and depth. I seriously can’t fathom or piece together my words without it seeming like I am missing or undermining it’s brilliance, everything is just perfection. Easily Bergman's Magnum Opus and most personal work, due to a large chunk being semi-autobiographical. Also, if you have the a good attention span like me, put your phone down and watch it in one sitting, it is so worth it.
