Now this is the type of western I can get into. Violent, dark, gritty, which can leave quite a few individuals a bit frazzled after viewing this but god damn if this isn't one aesthetically pleasing epic. The story follows a gang of outlaws looking to do a final big robbery before they toss in the towel. As we can all expect though, things do not turn out their way. In fact, things turn out horribly wrong quite quickly. One motif or symbol that continually pops up is the presence and close-up of children during particularly violent or unsettling scenes. Which really adds quite a lot to the dark nature and insidiousness of self-centered men. For me this is one of the main reasons why this western draws the most intrigue from me out of all the others I have seen in my lifetime.
Very few other movies, let alone westerns, can be compared to The Wild Bunch because it is truly a unique and bona-fide masterpiece. It flows together quite seamlessly. I also enjoy the historical context of the story as well. The Mexico backdrop really adds further appeal and intrigue from me. So overall I would have to say this is one of my favorite westerns right here. Just keep in mind that there is quite a bit of excessive violence and dark themes present here so brace yourselves for the onslaught.
