pretty decent actually… saw an edit of eddie spears the other day and was immediately entranced by his beauty so i committed to watching this. hoped he would be there more but i do love those stories and that they werent just narrated but actually shown. love indigenous stories they always fascinate me. the only one im really familiar with is one of a mountain across the lake from my hometown: the ojibwe had a silver mine but a spirit turned to stone on top of it when its location was discovered by white men. sleeping giant. its a beautiful sight from my side of the lake. loved that the stories took place all over and included different tribes. and i love the powwow at the end. really does feel like home.
i dont watch much indigenous cinema (changing that this year i swear) but every time i do i always wish i knew more about my culture. my grandma’s family was displaced from their reservation because dams were built and they flooded the land multiple times, then her parents died when she was 14 and was put into foster care. the whole conversation and story about the white guy who wanted to be apart of the culture is how im worried im perceived, because im white and didnt grow up directly in an indigenous home or on a reservation, and i found it nice that the grandpa was so accepting of it. its not like i had a choice. the person in my family who would know most knows very little because she barely grew up with it. im very grateful for all that she has taught me, taking me to powwows as a kid, teaching me beading, and taking me to a naming ceremony. i cant remember the ojibwe words for it but i am yellow thunderbird woman… it happened before i realized im nonbinary and ive always been curious if that realization wouldve changed my name. kind of not fond of being called woman but it did happen at a different time in my life so i cant stay mad. anyway whenever i watch movies with indigenous culture & characters i yearn for my own. i cut my hair off and i dont really wear earrings but i do have 2 pairs from my grandma, a beaded pair of feathers and a pair of moose? bone. cant remember if its moose but its some kind of bone. seeing shane with his long hair makes me wish i kept mine. maybe someday in the future i’ll feel okay enough to grow it out again.
i hate the colouring and the acting is mid but i do love a road trip and storytelling. love grandparents. i love mine. i love the ending. cant wait to watch more.
