If the first film is Heat influenced, this sequel is Ronin. Swaps out the action and higher stakes of the first surprise hit, for more of a slower-paced, methodical stealth heist. Now I know every heist is typically a stealth experience, but this unexpected French/Italian sequel feels a lot more like a mission that encourages you to go non-lethal. Gerard Butler’s infamous, leather jacket clad, bushy beard Big Nick is back, and is having a lot more of a laid back comedic role than his first rodeo. Butler is by far the best part of this sequel, and ill take as many dad action movies with him possible. Director Gudegast deftly exchanges the gritty, crime-infested streets of LA (s/o and safe wishes to those affected by the fires), for the more antiquated, traditionalist and historical laid-back nature of Mediterranean Europe. The geographic swap reflects against the new cast as well, swapping out the pulpy and seedy grimaces and machismo of the West Coast cops & robbers, for a this new gelato amused, croissant perplexed, club outing, mafia adjacent, Serbian connection party bonding caper. Add some slightly bigger ter affordable names like Dar Salim, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Noomi Rapace, and sign me up for a trilogy. Uncage the cats!
