In order to appreciate Kiki's Delivery Service to the fullest and in a broader sense - begin to understand Miyazaki's vision, you need not do much other than just.... Watch his work..
...Watch and just, become transported. Feel the wind and listen to the sounds, the crowded streets full of cars and people, all meticulously bending in unison creating a stellar animated adventure full of wonder and glee as we glide above the rooftops delivering packages to customers. And only then will you understand that feeling of pure joy and escapism he wants us all to feel. Something that we all crave for.
We are taken on an adventure with Kiki voiced by the wonderful Minami Takayama, a young witch out on a mandatory year away to become independent. And it's really as simple as it sounds. This 2D hand-drawn dream has lit me up like no other and in it's rather old age it still delivers just as much as any other modern animated movie going and then some. The vibrant colour pallette contrasts in every frame once again, sprouting a postcard effect in every shot that the Ghibli studio can possibly muster.
...I found it really hard to even put anything down in words tonight after this. Netflix really scored big time when they chose to bag all of these movies. Because it seems to get better with every entry I make. Instantly loveable characters, some of the best art design I've seen in animation period, beautiful orchestral sounds in moments when you least expect it, amazing geometry to the way the town is presented to how detailed every building and interior is.
It truly is a gift to the retinas - in every single way.
