“Who knows? Is this the start of something wonderful and new, or one more dream that I cannot make true?”

Well I did it. I watched that critically acclaimed musical that everyone loves so much. Now I see why La La Land is considered a masterpiece. I really was not interested in it for a while, mainly because it was a musical, but as time went on I became more open to the thought of watching it. I still waited until I thought the time was right to watch it, and yeah I’d say I picked a pretty good night.

Everything about this film is extremely well done. Stone and Gosling both put on top tier performances, and they make their characters and their relationship all the more likable. The story of this film is very well written as well. It’s pretty subtle, which adds a very comforting feel to the entire experience. Most of the movie is just watching these two characters pursue their dreams, and helping each other along the way. The whole thing builds up very nicely so when that outstanding ending does come it makes it feel incredibly deserved.

Also all of the technical aspects of the film are outstanding. The cinematography is stunning. I love long, one shot takes and La La Land is filled with them. On top of that every single scene is full of beautiful colors, which make the movie so visually inviting and immersive. The music in here is great too. I’m not a musical fan, but this film is so much more than a musical. Most of the music sequences in this feel very natural, with only a couple of exceptions. Even the big musical sequences that I usually would be against honestly aren’t too bad here, mainly because of how visually pleasing they are. However for the most part I loved the way music was used in the film.

Now as I was watching this film I liked it quite a bit, but it definitely wasn’t going to be a 5 for me. However, once that ending sequence played out and the credits started to roll I looked back on the film as a whole and instantly realized how much I loved it. The entire film really builds up to that last 10 minutes, and the what would typically feel like a typical romance movie instantly means so much more. I realized how much I loved Mia and Sebastian’s relationship, and what it actually represents. This film is so much more than a typical romance, and I’ll be rewatching this at some point so I can really explain the emotions this made me feel. For now I just know that I love this a lot more than I thought I did while watching the film, and I think it’s only going to get better as time goes on.

Overall, La La Land is a masterpiece that is worth all of the praise it gets. It’s an emotional and immersive experience that is so well executed. The more I think about this film the more I like it, and I’m definitely going to be rewatching it at some point to try to really pinpoint my thoughts about it.
