So my haneke journey started with the piano teacher, which was very much meh for me (check out that review). Now my initial opinion about haneke was that I watched better movies of better directors in bringing out the worst in people. But this felt a bit different somehow. Knowing that there are two versions exactly similar by the same director I was contemplating a lot about which one to watch first or rather which one to try first and then watch the other one with my girl if I like it, cause I was so much at the fence with the piano teacher and she didn't like it.
But here, it felt different. Obviously I knew haneke movies will be dark and unsettling, but what ticked my interest a bit was that the film almost broke the barrier between the characters and us the audience. Not only once but almost taking control of the plot as well when things went awry. Like forcefully destroying that tiny bit of hope which stays with every character till the end. Almost all the violence occurs off the screen but the consequences are clearly visible.
In the end, I loved it and I will watch the original one with my girl. Hope she loves it as well. 🤞
