Promising Young Woman

Promising Young Woman

I actually saw the ending of Promising Young Woman when I was a bit younger. I think around when it came out, and I was really freaked out by it. Specifically the climax of the movie. I was so disturbed but interested, and I searched for this thing but found nothing. Then, about a week ago I remembered about that film and specifically remember the Protagonist's multicolored hair and nurse outfit and it had disturbed me more than any film has before, apart from hearing out my father's friend tell him about the notorious cliff scene from Midsommar. But now, almost 5 years later I find the movie. Promising Young Woman, Directed by Emerald Fennell.

Promising Young Woman is a movie, one I don't believe I can fully describe in just words. It's Emerald Fennell's directorial debut before she went and did "Saltburn" which I unfortunately believed was far too pretentious even though there wasn't much substance apart from beautiful design and obviously the shock value. This film I feel like doesn't suffer from the lack of substance however, Cassandra's twisted mind and how she deals with her hatred and anger for the system for making Nina kill herself is the most interesting part of the film and I wish it was focused more upon. The film feels very much like her other work in which it makes itself seem overly artsy and so much to dissect from but in all honesty is rather straightforward, in a similar vain to Ryan Gosling's Directorial Debut Lost River in which it wants to be an intellectual arthouse film but in all honesty just isn't. I shouldn't of expected so much from this director but I'm disappointed even though in all I would still say I love this film and its far better than anything to come out of Saltburn I can't say it's the masterpiece I wanted it to be. The ending felt somewhat cheesy and a bit too happy to a degree. The main message of the film is trying to stand up against sexual abuse and the ways society and the system can sweep things under the rug in order to keep image to not hurt their own image. And I don't think it's super effective enough with an ending like this. It's so cheesy compared to the rest of the film and I wholeheartedly believe that a certain scene should've gone differently and if a certain character said something different it would've done the same thing and felt a bit more realistic and not making Cassie into some sort of heroic figure who got justice. Because she isn't a heroic character. There's times Cassie does blatantly bad things and while you still root for her she isn't a hero of some kind. She's a flawed Protagonist and she's even stated to have mental issues which aren't shown enough in her character other than brief moments which I think should of happened more often. This all being said I LOVE the sound design and the film looks beautiful, especially a few shots you'll definitely know if you're familiar with the film. Acting was great all around and Carey Mulligan was AMAZING as Cassie. The Dialogue was also really great and I think my only problem with the film was actually Carey Mulligan. Which unfortunately is a BIG part of this film. While I still adore this movie and love the idea of it. It isn't the film I wanted it to be, and that's okay. But i'm still slightly disappointed.

Actually Mclovin is in this film so its a 100/100.
Oh shit wait he's a sex offender?
