There are still funny elements in Chris Guest's take-down of small town artistic aspiration but on this occasion I noticed the sneering from Guest far more than I did in the noughties.
He is looking down his nose at most of these people and (particularly with Parker Posey) his ignorance of the humanity behind these caricatures is most evident.
If he hadn't already delivered a pitch perfect critique of rock I feel that his follow-ups would not have been as warmly received. The music and orchestration is, as always, excellent and the renditions of musical tropes from Bernstein to Sondheim are well rendered.
Weird how in a film that features almost all improvised scenes that Willard decided/was directed to get his dick out and yet a mere two decades later was doing public re-enactments of this famous scene.
