I finally did it. I finally committed to Love Exposure. It's been on my watchlist ever since I joined Letterboxd, and now - it's done. I made it through.
And I have reached Enlightenment.
The total running time is nearly 4 hours. The title card is 58 minutes into the film. There are multiple chapters throughout, each focusing on a single character and helping weave them into the epic narrative. It's a mishmash of genres and styles, its tone endlessly shifting but never becoming uneven. There isn't a dull moment to be found anywhere at all, the story and characters both engaging and unpredictable.
The final product is something incredibly weird and wholly wonderful - and it needs to be seen to be believed. Like an ultra-violent coming-of-age TV drama filled with love, loss, religion, cross-dressing, cults, porno, and panty shots - Love Exposure is, above all else, totally Sion Sono.
