This is about communism, I will not elaborate further
time was due for a rewatch
Not ranked, but Spirited Away will always be first.
This is not a list of the best movies I've watched, but the ones that I personally like the most, therefore not every movie I rate five stars will enter the list, and some of the movies I rate four and a half/four stars will enter, it's a list merely based on enjoyment rather than quality.
Subject to change
Kind of color coordinated, but not really

i'm writing a review for my movie criticism class, once I'm done with the exam I'll prob post it
still my favourite movie ever, Miyazaki you're a hero to me
it's easy to dismiss this movie as "the work of a pervert" or "voyeurism for the voyeur's sake", but I think that, if you manage to look behind the facade of perversion and decadence you'll find a melancholic meditation on the need to act without being able to do so that is so intrinsic to art and artists
i wanted to go to the cinema and this was playing, my opinion on it didn't change but the movie itself wasn't the reason i went
idk why but i find comfort in the despair of Hamaguchi's characters
even though my rating didn't change i liked it a lot more than i did before, love the use of mirrors

Ben's Japanuary Challenge 2024 https://boxd.it/r4Cda
Another day, another challenge, this one I've always wanted to partake in, but always remembered about it too late. I have a lot of Japanese movies on my Criterion Challenge, so I tried to go for ones I didn't put there and directors I have seen nothing or very little of (aside from Hamaguchi, whose movie I'm going to watch in the theatre at the end of the month, can't wait). Might take a bit longer than a month to go through them all, but I hope not, I'm very excited to dive more into Japanese cinema!
]]>Ben's list boxd.it/o60uu
My new year's resolutions include watching more movies, especially foreign movies, and so trying the Criterion Challenge again seemed like the perfect way to achieve that goal, to add on another level of difficulty I've decided that I have to review every single movie on this list (again, new year's resolutions include writing more). I skipped prompt nΒ°20, 100 years pf Olympic films, because I want to give myself a chance to actually finish this and I know there's no way I'm going to watch a sports documentary (sorry), I replaced the prompt with a second Watch any Criterion film from your watchlist, maybe it's cheating, but I wanna give myself a chance to actually finish the challenge this year.
Let's see how many of these I'll actually watch (I don't have many expectations given my inability to stick to a watchlist, even though I love making them)
spine 351-450
spine 601-700
rating higher than 4.3
first film in my watchlist
last film added to watchlist
longest film in the watchlist
most popular on my watchlist
Scorsese's world cinema project

First watch of 2023, had to rewatch for a visual essay I need to make for an exam. Though I just watched it last year I had a blast, enjoyed it even more than last time, it's camp, it's funny, the performances from the leads are simply captivating.
Like Gentlemen prefer blondes I rewatched this for my exam's essay. One of my favourite movies, going from Blonde straight to this I appreciated even more Varda's respectful gaze and the love she shows her characters.
Another movie I watched for the exam. Disturbing and provoking, while still looking astonishingly beautiful.
Probably Disney's best effort since Tangled, the narrative's execution is flawed, but it still manages to hit all the right spots and the core idea of healing generational trauma is compelling.
Period dramas are one of my comfort genres, I remembered this to be a bit better.
Still one of the best movies ever made, I love it with all my heart.
This movie lives now rent free in my mind
Rewatched it in a theatre, still good, still fucked up
From being hated to being one of my comfort movies, that's character development
Solid movie, gets messier and messier as it goes on but I don't really care

]]>Shiva Baby, probably.
Not ranked, just random.
Go to notes to read my random thoughts
First rewatch of 2022 in February, let's see how many times I will rewatch it from now on
I was a fool when I gave this 4 stars.
Pretti dresses
First time I watched Amadeus I hated it.
Second time I thought it was good, but didn't see why people could be obsessed with it.
Third time I began to see why it's one of the most acclaimed movies of all time.
I await the fourth viewing to completely fall in love with it.
Feels like childhood
Who is surprised?
Are you surprised?
I am not surprised.
What I love most about rewatching this is seeing how many foreshadowing details are hidden inside of it. I wonder if the book is as good as the movie.
Hadn't seen it in a long time, solid plot and genius craft

]]>Last year I made a list "Andra explores Italy", the point was to "force" myself to watch more movies from Italy (my country), and, while I still need to watch most of the movies on that list, it worked, I discovered some amazing movies and I plan on continuing to follow that list in the future, maybe even expand it.
Now, there are lots of countries I know very little about movie-wise, and so I decided to take that project on a new level and make a new list on a country I have watched very few things from: China.
China has a rich history and I know very little about it and its cinema, so I hope this list will be an incentive to explore more of the things I don't know.
This will both feature movies from China and Hong Kong.
Recs are always welcomed, both movie recs and essays and books about this subject.
Thanks to my friend Reibureibu, whose help was essential for compiling this list.

Doing some research for my other list I noticed how in many casese when searching for Chinese movies there where suggestions of Taiwanese movies, because of language reasons.
I thought it would have been interesting to watch both Chinese and Taiwanese movies to compare them and to find out the differences and the similiraties between the two of them.

As of 11.11 p.m. I declare defeat. I could probably watch Antiporno but honestly I feel like it wouldn't be fair to the movie, I'm losing lucidity and would end up not gettinf half of what's going on. Anyways, I'm happy I watched two very good movies
Finished: 9.02 p.m.
Disturbing and criminally underrated
Finished at 11.08 p.m.
Probably one of the best use of shadows and silhouette ever made
Yes, I did watch Shiva Baby at least five times. No, I do not think it's normal to watch a movie so many time in such a little span of time. Yes, I will continue to be obsessed with it.
In the notes I will add the date of when I will actually manage to watch them, just to put myself to shame even more

]]>As an Italian Iβve been pressured from a young age by people who don't know anything about cinema to watch Italian features, resulting only in my naive, stubborn rejection of movie from my country. As I said, I was very naive. Now I find myself in total ignorance of Italian cinema, so this list serves as a prompt for me to get to watch stuff out of my βcomfort zoneβ, I hope to watch one of them per week, more if I feel in the mood. Feel free to recommend me any classic Italian movie I should watch, recs are always welcomed.

]]>Billy Wilder has been one of the best screenwriter in Hollywood history. A perfectionist on writing, he also was able to single handedly create a new cinematic genre: noir.
