Wholesome fun. Stylistically this is the best animated movie I've ever seen, utilizing psychedelic flashing colors and character and dialogue bubbles to adapt towards a more comic-like form. Honestly, the high rating is mostly just for the stellar animation alone. Sony has consistently put out sub-par animated movies for the past decade, and it's shocking to see them suddenly shatter expectations and boundaries previously put on American animation. The autumn trees as the Spiders are escaping from the lab were vibrant and beautiful, and the final fight's constant color shifts were downright enthralling. It's also hands-down the best Spider-Man movie so far.
The movie features a perfectly balanced cast of Spider-people with unique quirks and comedy that keeps things light but still on-tone. Our three mains (Peter, Miles, and Gwen) were tame but grounded the movie while adding minor comedy. Peni, Porker, and Nicolas Cage were a little bit out-there, but acted as comedic sides to bring the mood up. Wish they hadn't changed Peni's design though. Even as a weeb, I do not approve. I guess there really is such a thing as too much anime.
I'm not super knowledgeable on Spider-Man canon, but I thought most of the villains ranged from good to amazing. I loved the Doc. Oc twist; not only were our heroes diverse, but so were the villains! (I also loved how she mentions that all her friends call her Liv rather than Doc. Oc, and when she bursts into Aunt May's house, May calls her Liv too.) Green Goblin, Scorpion, and Prowler were also great, although the former was included very sparingly. I really didn't care for Kingpin as a main antagonist (and don't even know the name of Zombie-dude) so I wish one of the other four had served that role instead.
Plot wise, it's ok. Definitely not the greatest, but the message was just what we needed from a Spider-Man movie. Even though it's repetitively slammed in our face, I really am left with the feeling that anyone can be Spider-Man.
