I'm a couple weeks late, but thankful that I still got to see Oppenheimer on the big screen. I initially thought that I'd only appreciate the craftsmanship of the movie and nothing more, Nolan is a very conflicting director and when he tends to take on more ambitious projects, they can very much hit or miss. But I'm glad to say that this is one of Nolan's very greatest films. Not sure yet if it tops his filmography, but it very clearly stands as one of his greatest achievements.
The raw and unflattering portrayal of Oppenheimer himself showing his greatest qualities and also his biggest faults makes this feel less like a biopic and more of a historical account of his actions. Everybody really fits their roles particularly well, however, some of the cameos definitely took me out of the moment with some surprisingly recognizable faces (Jack Quaid my beloved). For the most part though, the focus is on Cillian Murphy and he gives what is likely the best performance of his career. Absolutely spectacular stuff, he truly blends into the role and at no point did I see him as an actor playing a role.
The real devastation the movie brings is of course surrounding the bomb, but I was surprised to see how invested I was surrounding the fallout of the Hiroshima bombing. The moral implications and the sabotage by Strauss kept me engaged long after the big event happened. The ending might be the most impactful one Nolan has given since Inception. It's one of my favorite movies of the year no doubt, and I'm excited to keep making my way through Chris Nolan's filmography to see if anything matches this movie.
