Marvel was riding the wave to their cultural peak, Thor movies to the left of me, Captain America movies to the right, and then out comes this refreshing R-rated, fourth-wall-breaking superhero movie. Watching all the winks and nudges and cheeky references to the X-Men and the superhero genre in a packed cinema at the time was certainly a lot of fun.
All these years later it stills holds up pretty well. Sure it's cliched and knows its cliched, but yet it still works, just through the sheer wit and energy of Ryan Reynolds who was born to play the crass, obnoxious, ultra-violent Deadpool.
The action is fine, the story is simple, and yet this is a funny, breezy, entertaining movie. Not as anarchic as it probably could've been, but just the right amount of mischief that gave superhero audiences something fresh and fun for 2016.
