The opening brought back many memories. Maybe an odd thing to say, but I never had a close bond with any of my grandparents. I never got the slightest impression they were somewhat interested in me or my activities. When my grandmother died, my parents and I moved in with my grandfather for 3 years (from my age 12-15), and even then it was difficult, probably the age difference was too much of a deal. I even remember crying in the back of the car during driving to my other grandparents...
To put it mildly, the career of Shyamalan was on a rather low point. After some succesful first movies, he ended up in creating tales almost universally rejected. With this he seems to jump on the mockumentary/found footage bandwagon, combined with the odd proceedings like for example on display in Signs. I believe the result is a mixed bag. It's never uninteresting, and the kids make the best of it, but the occurring nocturnal events are so episodical, something happens, and then fade to black, up to the next morning, and this times 5. Further on the scares that are being used (the crawling, the jump scares) are copy pasted from numerous cheap found footage horrors, and don't always fit with the rest of the movie.
After watching I said to my wife I had the same final sentiment as when coming out of the theatre after Signs ended, and that was "is it only that?". I truly hope Shyamalan is capable of surprising us, but with this movie he hasn't won me over.
