I'm not gonna lie, I fought the magic that is La La Land for as long as humanly possible. Hype around awards season is usually just that: hype. Then I started watching it and there was this shot, this perfect shot, that won me over and made me succumb to all things La La. It's from the movie theater scene and it happens when Emma Stone is looking into the crowd for Ryan Gosling. The light from the projector catches Stone's face and it's pure unadulterated cinematic witchcraft. That one shot feels nostalgic and fresh at the same time. And there's so many other shots like that throughout the film. Damien Chazelle is a fucking genius. There's no other way to put it. His hype is well-deserved and so is La La Land's.
