unfortunately horror movies don’t scare me because i’m catholic, but i enjoyed this one. it understands that serial killer procedurals should be approached as horror films, that the horror lies in the danger and unknowability of the killer’s capacities, elevating it to the realm of the supernatural. contrary to the frequent comparisons to the silence of the lambs, i think the key text here is kiyoshi kurosawa’s cure, concerned as it is with the suggestibility of evil. this film also understands that a good nicolas cage performance must self-reflexively be about nicolas cage performances, that its exaggeratedness cannot be divorced from the inherent goofiness of cage’s style, but in embracing it you can twist it into something uncanny. that said, maika monroe had the best performance. this movie scratched my x-files itch
