Happy New Year everyone!
I feel like 2021 has actually turned out to be a really positive year for cinema, especially indie films and international features. There's been a - very nice - shortage of blockbusters this year, and despite having 5 Marvel films being churned out, this gave a lot of smaller films so much more attention. I think in any other year, something like Spencer wouldn't have achieved the mainstream appeal that it did.
While the first half of the year was extremely lacklustre, from October onwards we've been so spoiled with fantastic films, lots of them quieter more reflective ones, which I think is perfect for such a chaotic and hectic year. And even the blockbusters that we did get weren't too bad; I'm yet to see a lowkey film called No Way Home but apparently that's doing pretty well? And DC really served with the Snyder Cut and the decent Suicide Squad, so that was nice. And yes as ever, there were some atrocities released but with streaming services becoming more and more influential, I feel like they were less noticeable.
Personally, 2021 was my best year for cinema so far. I watched more films than I ever have, discovered over half of my top 100 films, finally broke away from being a filmbro, and started to lean into foreign cinema. It's been a fantastic journey discovering my taste, and really growing on Letterboxd too. Writing reviews really got me through the first half of this year and thank you to everyone who supported and enjoyed them!

Most overhyped: Dune/The Green Knight
Most underrated: West Side Story
Best cinematography: West Side Story
Best writing: C'mon C'mon/Licorice Pizza
Best actor: Joaquin Phoenix
Best actress: Kristen Stewart
Best score: Spencer/West Side Story
Best production design: The French Dispatch
I've still got around 30 or so films which I plan to see ASAP, if anyone knows where I can find The Worst Person in the World to watch, please let me know!!!
