Ye this doesn't deserve any of the buzz it's getting for the awards season. To say the positives, the ensemble cast were decent in their roles. Especially Zoe Saldana and Karla Sofia Gascon. The movie also starts promising with an interesting plot, but after the 4 year time jump, it all goes downhill. It tries to tell many things at one time and kinda gets all over the place. Even the new identity of Emilia Perez and all is portrayed surface level. I didn't emotionally connect with the character. The story of a person who took a gender affirming surgery being comfortable with their new identity and trying to connect with their daughter is an interesting plot, but the cartel stuff and the other issues it tries to tackle, the musical aspect, it gets all over the place. The musical sequences really feel out of the place. I'm a big fan of musicals, but the musical aspect of this is really unappealing. The visual palette is stunning, but the way the musical sequences are shot are not really impressive and the songs also lack something. The dialogues are pretentious. This is one of the musicals where the songs drag the movie. The makers didn't do a good job with the pacing. It bored me at times. Overall, just overhyped.
