The Santa Clause (1994)-
1994 saw many great films such as Pulp Fiction, Leon, Forrest Gump and even Shawshank Redemption. This however, is definitely not one. All the side characters were extremely underwhelming and even Tim Allen’s character was very generic. Moreover all the performances besides Allen’s range between fine and terrible. Allen carries the film as without him this film would’ve been abysmal. He also has some really nice chemistry with the kid who plays his son. It’s a very unfocused film with many tonal inconsistencies as the film feels like it has no sense of direction or any idea how to build off this fairly interesting premise properly. I was really rooting for this film as it could’ve been a clever, enjoyable Christmas flick but instead it turned out to be a generic, bland and forgettable film that fails to offer anything besides conventional characters with arcs we’ve seen before. Also the script often takes many short cuts through out in regards to the story and it often makes the film feel clunky and lazy. Overall The Santa Clause is a really poor film boosted to a ‘fine mediocre film’ due to a decent Tim Allen performance and an engaging premise. It’s a shame the film rarely takes advantage of either properly
