Robert Eggers' directorial debut signifies his brilliant eye for the camera and his artistic outlook and style of telling an original story. The film was cast brilliantly, with each performance adding to the emotional and horrific layers of the disturbing nature of the film. The authenticity of the scenery immerses the viewers into the period the film is set in and the religious turmoil the characters face. Eggers' presentation of the film allows it to have an eerie feel throughout, seeping the horror deep within the soul of the viewer. The exploration of themes such as religion, especially in a time when it was a pivotal standpoint in people's lives, creates a psychological drama for the family the film centers around. Giving each character a perspective on the subject matter produces a riveting and emotional weight to the film. The villain is portrayed as horrifyingly brilliant, playing into the themes the film focuses on as well as being an unseen and motivationless force that will undoubtedly terrify. As a minor flaw, the film can slow down in some areas, but overall does not derail the energy it produces. Without a doubt, though, this is one of the most original horror films to release in a while, creating an unnerving experience as well as a riveting psychological horror and drama that will leave any viewer stunned in its brilliancy.
